The essential characteristics of quality welding gloves

Among the personal protective equipment of welders, gloves are one of the major elements. The welder’s hand is the part of the body that is most exposed to the mechanical and thermal risks of the job. A long glove protects the wrist and forearm. One of the first characteristics of the welder’s glove is its comfort; the flexibility of the glove must allow the hands a good dexterity in the handling of products and objects. Under its robust appearance, the welding glove must act as a second skin, from the palm to the fingertips. The resistance of the glove is another essential feature. If the welder is exposed to extreme heat generated by the tools, other risks must be taken into account for maximum welding protection :

Choosing the right welding gloves

The welding glove must above all meet the safety requirements established by strict European standards: EN ISO 21420, EN 407, EN 388, EN 12477 are references that inform about the level of reliability of the glove against the risks of accidents. These standards are clearly indicated by pictograms on the gloves. These gloves are adapted to the type of welding (TIG or MIG) by a dedicated insulation and a resistance to molten metal projections.

The right choice of size and fit of a pair of welding gloves ensures sufficient tactile sensitivity for great dexterity. A 5-finger model is preferred for a good grip.

Quality materials enhance the welder’s safety and protect against wear and tear; different leather ranges exist with different levels of heat resistance. A fireproof fleece lining may be necessary for MIG/MAG and arc welding.
